The committee had its origins in a committee appointed by President Benjamin Ide Wheeler to oversee the management of the Greek Theatre after its construction in 1903. The chair of the committee was William Dallam Armes, professor of English. After his death in 1918, Samuel Hume as appointed as director of the Greek Theatre. Hume resigned in 1923, and there was a return to a management committee, which was in effect until the creation of a more professional theater management organization, Cal Performances, in about 1980.
