Major, 13th Illinois Cavalry; inspector, clerk and collector, Chicago Customs House, 1865-1872.

A native of Germany, Behlendorff settled in Louisiana upon immigrating to the United States and moved north with the onset of the Civil War. He was first a member of a battalion of General Service Recruits under Captain Frederick Steele, which was disbanded. He then enlisted in the 13th Illinois Cavalry.
