Often known as "Mr. Air Force Academy," Joseph Reich made significant contributions to the founding and growth of the institution dating back to 1948. In conjunction with other Colorado Springs and state government and civic leaders, he was instrumental in the Colorado site selection for the youngest service academy. A local businessman who for many years owned his own restaurant, Mr. Reich was extremely active in the Colorado Springs Community. The list of his civic activities includes Kiwanis Club Governor, Red Cross Director, Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce Director, Military Affairs Committee Chairman, Fort Carson Foundation President, Fort Carson National Bank Director, and Navy League of the United States National Director, just to name a few. Among awards presented to Joseph Reich for his untiring efforts was the Colorado Springs Man of the Year Award, both the U. S. Air Force and the U. S. Navy awards for Outstanding Civilian, the Boy Scout Beaver Award, the Colorado Air Force Association Award, the Colorado Aviation Historical Society Award and induction into the Colorado-Wyoming Restaurant Association Hall of Fame.
