Stannard, George Jerrison, 1820-1886
Variant namesFrederick William Tilton (ca. 1821-June 6, 1890) was a successful New Orleans businessman and philanthropist. He was born and educated in New Hampshire, son of Timothy Tilton and Clarissa Wheeler. He moved to New Orleans, La., in 1838, married Caroline Stannard, and amassed a fortune in the import business. He supported the Confederacy financially from within New Orleans, and then from Europe. Although most of his property was seized, he rebuilt in the postwar years. He and Caroline had no children. They were patrons of the arts and culture in New Orleans. Prior to his death, he expressed an interest in supporting Tulane University; his wife donated $50,000 for construction of F. W.
