Born in Athens, Vermont, on September 22, 1834, Hudson studied surveying in Townshend, Vermont. Nathaniel Carlos Hudson, Hudson's brother, became a lawyer in New York City after running away from home when he was fourteen. In 1862, Hudson enlisted in Company E of the 6th Iowa Cavalry. This regiment was officially organized at Camp Hendershott near Davenport, Iowa in early 1863. It moved to Sioux City, Dakota in March 1863. Fort Randall, Fort Pierre, and Fort Sully were some of the Dakota locations where Hudson's regiment faced hostile Sioux Indians. Hudson was mustered out on October 17, 1865. From 1880 to 1910, Hudson lived in Benton County, Tennessee where he was married to Elisabeth Wygul and worked as a farmer. The couple had four children, Jerome, Carltus, William and Oka.
