The organization, an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women, was organized in 1961. Its purpose is to encourage high professional journalistic standards and create opportunities for women in Alaska in the field of journalism. It holds an annual meeting, hosts an annual writing contest, sponsors seminars and workshops on topics in journalism and communications, presents an annual scholarship to a student in journalism, and publishes a monthly newsletter, "Arctic-ulation."
