On April 23, 1849, Hoover sailed as a member of the Baltimore and Frederick Mining and Trading Company on the Schooner Creole, from Baltimore, Maryland, bound to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama. The diary ends abruptly on the Pacific Ocean side of Panama, probably due to the death by cholera of the author.
