Gertrude B. Sayre was the wife of Robert H. Sayre, manager of the Smuggler Mine near Telluride, Colorado. The Smuggler Mine was discovered by John Fallon in the mid-1870s, and the mine produced silver ores with traces of gold and lesser metals throughout the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. General managers of the property included Thomas Ernest Waters, Arthur Collins, and Bulkeley Wells. Robert Sayre was replaced as manager of the Smuggler in 1940, and, sometime afterwards, the mine was acquired by the Idarado Mining Company, a subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corp.
