Established in 1869 by William Deacon, Main Street Iron Works produced engines for steam schooners, specializing in stern wheel engines for river vessels, many of which plied the Alaskan rivers, and was purchased by Fulton Iron Works in 1905, and Keystone Boiler Works was acquired in 1914. In addition to making marine engines for ships and power plants, the Main Street Iron Works made other various mechanical equipment and parts; water tubes, tabular boilers, oil and water tanks, feed water heaters, distillers, condensers, evaporators, hoists, valves, fittings, and dredgers, for example. The company's machine shops were located at 163 and 173 Main Street in San Francisco. In 1915, Main Street Iron Works installed a main engine and associated machinery into Wapama (built 1915; steam schooner).
