Heman H. Gillett was born on May 22, 1823 in Thetford, Vermont, the oldest son of Henry and Hannah (Wallace) Gillett. He was educated at the Thetford Academy, graduated from Dartmouth Medical School in 1847, and established a medical practice in Corinth, Vermont until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 8th Regiment of Vermont Volunteers on December 10, 1861 and as surgeon on June 25, 1862. He mustered out on June 28, 1865. After the war he returned to the family farm in Thetford and he died May 7, 1907.

Heman Henry Gillett was born on May 22, 1823, to Henry Gillett and Hannah Wallace, in Thetford, Vermont. He had at least three sisters: Rosette S., Louisa M., and Catherine, and one brother with the initials S.H. In 1847, Gillett graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and moved to Corinth, Vermont, where he practiced medicine and represented Corinth in the state legislature until the outbreak of the Civil War. Gillett was commissioned as assistant surgeon with the 8th Vermont Volunteers in December 1861. Upon assignment, he left immediately to attend to sick solders in the winter camp in Brattleboro, Vermont, and was soon sent to Louisiana to help with the wounded at Raceland. In June 1862, Gillett was promoted to head surgeon of his regiment and ran the brigade hospital during the siege of Port Hudson. He served until the end of the war and mustered out on June 28, 1865. After the war, Gillett returned to his Thetford family farm. He represented the town at the Vermont Constitutional convention in 1870, served on the United States examining board for pensions in 1886, and was a trustee for the Thetford Academy in 1887. He died in Thetford in May of 1907.
