Lothrop was a surgeon in the First Iowa Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War, also serving as the regiment's historian. After the war he took on the projects of writing a history of the First Cavalry and keeping members of the regiment in touch with each other. To this end he served as the secretary for the Historical Society of the First Regiment Iowa Cavalry Volunteers.
