Saunders served two terms as Board of Directors President of Planned Parenthood Alameda/San Francisco, 1985-1986.

Planned Parenthood Alameda/San Francisco (PPASF) began in 1929 as two community-based birth control clinics: the Maternal Health Center of the Baby Hygiene Committee in San Francisco, and the Mother's Health Clinic in Oakland. In late 1969, the Planned Parenthoods of Alameda and San Francisco counties merged. In 1992, Saunders began the task of writing the history of PPASF.
