Administrative History

The Ames Astrogram is an official publication of the NASA Ames Research Center. It began publication in October 1958, the first month that Ames Research Center began operating as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Although the research center started in 1939 as the NACA Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, there was no newsletter prior to 1958.

The purpose of the Astrogram is to improve the communication among Ames employees by informing employees of events at NASA Ames as well as events that are NASA-wide. The Astrogram also provides news of NASA Ames employees and activities.

From its first issue in 1958 through February 2002, the Astrogram was published every other Thursday. Beginning in March 2002 and continuing to the present, the Astrogram is published once a month at the beginning of the month, reporting the previous month's activities and events. Beginning in October 2007, the Astrogram is published in electronic format only, and is available on the NASA Amed Web site.

In its first years, the Astrogram was a joint effort of the NASA Ames Photo Branch and Administrative Service, with the Personnel Branch providing editing services. Today, the Astrogram is the responsibility of the NASA Ames Public Affairs Division.
