Dr. Alvin Arthur Fahrner (1915-1994), a native of Farmville, Va., was a professor of history at East Carolina University from 1960 through 1981. Fahrner served upon the USS CALIFORNIA during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, was an aide to Admiral Edward W. Hanson, and saw action in most of the major combined military operations in the Pacific, including the Marshall Islands, Saipan, the Marianas, and Iwo Jima.
