The Division of Conservation Resources was established in the Department of Natural Rescources in 1963 and placed in the secretary's office, Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, in 1974.

St 1963, c 664 established the Division of Conservation Services in the Dept. of Natural Resources. (Within it was established the Committee for Conservation of Soil, Water, and Related Resources as the legal successor to the State Soil Conservation Committee in the Dept. of Agriculture, established by St 1945, c 531.) St 1974, c 806, s 1 and St 1975, c 706, s 68 placed the division (and committee) within the office of the secretary of environmental affairs (Executive Office of Environmental Affairs). The division's functions, currently described in MGLA c 21, ss 18-25A, are to assist regional conservation districts and municipal conservation, park, and recreation commissions to preserve and acquire open space.
