The Atlanta Press Photographers Association, Inc. (APPA) was chartered on December 8, 1971 in Fulton County (Atlanta, Georgia). George M. Fox was the petitioner. Noel Davis was the registered agent, and William F. Young was the incorporator. The APPA was organized as a non-profit association with the following purposes: "to promote the general welfare of those interested in press, news and professional press photography by means of educational instructional and training programs and projects; to promote better photography and a better understanding of this profession through public educational training and informational programs and projects; and to perpetuate the memory and the spirit of deceased members of the Atlanta Press Photographers Association." The initial Board of Directors was comprised of: Noel Davis, Bill Mahan, Gerald Gregg, Jack Belich, Joe McTyre, Tommy Thompson, and Bob Connell. Prior to this charter the Atlanta Press Photographers Association existed unincorporated in the early 1960s. Little is known about this earlier association.
