Life Membership and In Memoriam began prior to the creation of the Women's Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA). It began in 1879 in the General Synod (GS), 1911 in the General Council (GC), and 1912 in the United Synod of the South (USS). The GS added the In Memoriam component in 1911. It started as a way to honor members of the women's missionary societies, and deceased coworkers, but over time grew to include any woman, man, or child members wished to honor. In the ULCA's Women's Missionary Society (WMS), people enrolled as Life Members received a certificate and a pin in the shape of a cross.
