Maurice de Sausmarez was born on 20 October 1915 and educated at Christ's Hospital and the Royal College of Art. As a painter he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Leicester Galleries and with the London Group and the Artists' International Assoociation. He was better known as a teacher and writer. He served as Chairman of the AIA from 1946-48 and was Head of the Fine Art department at Leeds University 1950-59. In 1962 he became Principal of the Byam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing. He wrote a number of books on art including 'The Dynamics of Visual form' 1964 and contributed articles on art and art education to several periodicals and journals. Maurice de Sausmarez died in 1969
