Captain (CPT) John C. Ausland enlisted in the Army shortly after Pearl Harbor. During the summer of 1942, he attended the Artillery Officer's Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Ausland was assigned to the 29th Field Artillery Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. While in training in the United States and in England, he served in A Battery and in Headquarters as Assistant S-2. Before the Normandy landing, he was assigned as liaison officer to Colonel (COL) James Van Fleet with the 8th Infantry Regiment. At the end of the War, he commanded B Battery. Ausland completed his college degree and entered the Foreign Service.
