Schinz, Albert W., 1919-1985
Albert W. Schinz (b. 1919, Ottawa, Ill.-d. Jan. 18, 1985), U.S. Air Force officer, entered the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet and completed pilot training in 1940. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations as pilot, flight commander, operations officer, squadron commander, then deputy group commander with the 41st Fighter Squadron and 475th Fighter Group in New Guinea. In 1951 he was assigned to the 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing in Korea as deputy commander. He served overseas again in the early 1950s as commander, 50th Fighter Bomber Group, and director of operations and training, U.S. Air Forces in Europe HQ in Germany. In 1960 General Schinz assumed command of the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing, serving in Turkey and Germany. He became chief of the Air Force Advisory Group, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam in 1965. In 1970 he assumed command of the 12th Air Force. This command pilot with more than 4,000 flying hours retired in 1971.
