Born in Bloomfield, Ontario County, N.Y.; came to Buffalo in 1819. A furrier and hatter by trade, he served as mayor of Buffalo in 1844, and was appointed collector of customs for the District of Buffalo Creek by Millard Fillmore, a lifelong personal friend, in 1851.
