Henry Redwood Wharton attended the University of Pennsylvania receiving his A.B. in 1873. He studied medicine at the University and graduated in 1876. He continued at the University serving as an intern at the University Hospital where he was strongly influenced by Dr. Agnew, Dr. John Ashhurst, and Dr. John Neil. Following his tenure with the University Hospital, Wharton served an internship with Germantown Hospital. Concluding his internship with Germantown Hospital he was offered a position of assistant surgeon at the University Hospital which he accepted. In 1891 he was elected surgeon at Presbyterian Hospital where he conducted surgery until retirement. He continued to demonstrate surgery at the University, and in 1901 he was elected professor of clinical surgery at the Women's Medical College of Philadelphia. He married Edith R. Booth; they had five children.
