William Gordon Craig was born in 1931 in Whitley Bay, Northumberland. He attended the University of Glasgow from 1948-1952 to study civil engineering. In his first year he took classes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Natural Philosophy, and Engineering Drawing I. In his second year he studied General Engineering, Mathematics II, and Engineering Drawing II. He then took classes in Applied Mechanics II, Civil Engineering I, Higher Natural Philosophy, Engineering Design General, and Geology for Civil Engineering in his third year. In his final year at university he took classes in Applied Mechanics III, Civil Engineering II, and Civil Engineering Design. He graduated with a BSc in 1952.

During his working life, he was employed by Halcrow Consultants for a period, before completing National Service with the Royal Engineers as a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant from 1954-1956 . After National Service, he entered a lifelong career in engineering and construction, first working for Balfour Beatty and then from 1959 until his retirement in 1994 he worked for Taylor Woodrow where in 1976 he was made a company director. His employment took him to many and varied parts of the world.

Craig is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society , and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Companies of Engineers and of Constructors . He is a past Honorary Secretary of the Queenhithe Ward Club , of which he became Chairman in 2000 . In Glasgow , he has been a Burgess and Guild Brother in the Incorporation of Hammermen since 1973 , and he can trace his Hammermen antecedents directly back to 1640 .
