William Joseph Barnhart was born in Boonville, Mo., in 1923. Barnhart joined the military in 1943, serving in France and Austria for 18 months. Beginning in April 1946, Barnhart attended the University of Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1947 and a Masters of Arts in 1949. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1955. Barnhart served as dean of Florida Memorial College in Saint Augustine, Fla., and was on the English faculty at Shepherd University in West Virginia. He died in 1978.

William Joseph Barnhart was born 1 December 1923 in Boonville, Mo. Barnhart attended Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo., for two years. In March 1943, he joined the military where he attended an Army Specialized Training Program at Michigan State College for three months. He served in France and Austria for 18 months. Upon returning to the United States in April 1946, he attended the University of Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1947 and a Masters of Arts in 1949. He then attended the University of North Carolina and received a Ph.D. in 1955. Barnhart went on to teach English Literature at Florida Memorial College, where he served as Dean of the College. He then moved to Shepherdstown, W.Va., where he was on the English faculty at Shepherd University. He died 21 August 1978 of a heart attack.
