The Glasgow University Mountaineering Club first appeared in the University of Glasgow Student Handbooks in the academic year 1942-1943 , prior to which it is not clear whether the club existed. The first Student Handbook entry mentions a mid-term "meet" to be held at Arrochar. The subsequent year's entry invites beginners to join the club, and mentions activities such as rock and snow climbing, hill walking and lantern lectures. The Honorary President then was Archibald C Pickles. There was also an annual subscription fee. The magazines in this collection show that these outdoor group activities activites, known as "meets", became regular events for the society, taking place at various locations. The Glasgow University Mountaineering Club still holds regular meets and other social events.
