Smith, Gustavus Adolphus, 1820-1885.

Smith was a Decatur, Illinois carriage maker who became colonel of the 35th Illinois Infantry on September 1, 1861. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862, became colonel of the 155th Illinois Infantry, and was mustered out December 14, 1865. He was brevetted brigadier general in 1866 and appointed collector of internal revenue for New Mexico Territory in 1869. Smith lived in New Mexico for the rest of his life.
