Sometime in the late 1920s, the "Roseau Stone" was unearthed in a garden in Roseau, Minnesota. Due to the unusual carvings on the stone, several residents believed it to be evidence of Viking exploration in North America prior to the voyages of Columbus. The stone came into the possession of Mike Holm, a resident of Roseau, and Minnesota Secretary of State (1920-1952). Holm devoted much effort to having the stone studied and the runic-like carvings on it deciphered. The stone, however, never became as well known or controversial as the Kensington Rune Stone. Although Holm donated his records concerning the stone to the Minnesota Historical Society, he kept the artifact. The stone's current location and existence is unknown.
