Hoddle, Robert, 1794-1881
Variant namesRobert Hoddle arrived in New South Wales in 1823 and worked with J. Oxley in Queensland and the Blue Mountains. In 1837 he was appointed senior surveyor at Port Phillip and designed Melbourne, Geelong, Williamstown and many other Victorian settlements. George Baxter Pritchard was head of the school of mines at the Working Men's College (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) 1897-1934.

Born in London, Robert Hoddle came to New South Wales in 1823 and was appointed assistant surveyor in Sydney at the request of John Oxley. Hoddle is chiefly remembered for his work in laying out Melbourne in 1837. Between 1851 and 1857, he was Victoria's first surveyor-general.
