Sylvanus Smith was born on 23 May 1817, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. At the time of his birth, his father, Captain Jonathan Smith, was 36 and his mother, Zilpha Drew, was 37. He married Judith Winsor McLauthlin on 28 August 1841, in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. They were the parents of 2 sons, Sidney Smith and Erasmus Ford Smith, and 4 daughters, Francess Ann Smith, Zilpha Drew Smith, Mary Hathaway Smith, and Jennie West Smith. Sylvanus lived in Massachusetts, United States in 1870 and Boston Ward 1, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States in 1900. He died on 30 July 1901, in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States, at the age of 84, and was buried in Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States.
