Jean Allen Battle was born on June 15, 1914 in Talladega, Alabama. After serving as a commissioned officer in the Army Air Force during World War II, Battle earned an Ed.D. in Education/Administration from the University of Florida in 1941. Battle began teaching at Florida Southern College in 1946, becoming Dean of Students in 1948 and Dean of the College in 1956. In 1959, he joined the University of South Florida as a professor of Education and served as the first Dean of the College of Education.
