Luke Hutton is variously said to have been a son of Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York, or of Robert Hutton, prebendary of Durham. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1582, but left without a degree and took to a violent life. He was arrested for robbery and executed at York in 1596. A broadside ballad, "Luke Hutton's lamentation which he wrote the day before his death," was published in 1598. He is also the reputed author of The black dogge of Newgate ([s. d.], reprinted 1638).
