Track coach, professor, and physician, Byrd earned three degrees at Stanford University: A.B. in economics, 1929, M.A. in hygiene and physical education, 1933, and Ed.D. in health education, 1940. In 1947 he earned his M.D. from the University of California. From 1932-1937 he was on the faculty at the College of San Mateo and their track coach. In 1937 he joined the Stanford faculty, where he taught until his retirement in 1971.
