Bernard Eugene Ferrara was born in Charleston, South Carolina on November 19, 1924 to Seth J. Ferrara, Jr. and Ermine V. Ferrara. He attended the Cathedral School and Bishop England High School and later graduated from the College of Charleston and the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. He interned at Roper Hospital and completed his surgical residency at Roper Hospital and Medical College of South Carolina. He practiced general and thoracic surgery in Charleston for many years, later moving his practice to New London, Connecticut. He finished his medical career as a staff surgeon at the Veterans Administration Center in Lake City, Florida. He was active in the American Board of Surgery and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Charleston County Medical Association, the Medical Society of South Carolina and the Hibernian Society. He was married to Dr. Emily McDuffie Ferrara with whom he had six children. He died on April 14, 1995 on Daufuski Island, South Carolina.
