Margaret Chapman became the first director and librarian of Special Collections at the University of South Florida in February 1962. During her tenure (1962-1971), she helped develop collections in Floridiana and rare books, encouraged the Florida Historical Society and its research library to relocate to the University of South Florida, and acquired the papers of Florida Governor LeRoy Collins and Congressman Sam Gibbons.
