He received his Ph.D. from the University of Utrecht and taught there until his departure for the United States. Herbert A. Laitinen studied under Kolthoff. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1940 and taught at the University of Illinois. He worked on synthetic rubber research during WWII.
