Helen Mary Janney (HMJ) was born in 1878 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to T.B. Janney and Mary Wheaten Janney. Her father was a hardware merchant. She attended Stanley Hall in Minnesota prior to attending Smith College. She was very active in student activities at Smith. She was involved with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mandolin Club, Novel Club, and Phi Kappa Psi, a literary society. She lived in Plymouth Hall while at Smith. She graduated from Smith College in 1900. In 1902, she married Charles Merritt Case. They had three sons and one daughter, who attended Smith College. Janney was very active in the Red Cross during her life. She died on February 26, 1962.
