Variant namesThe University of New England was created in 1978 by the merger of St. Francis College (founded in 1939 as College Seraphique, name changed to St. Francis Junior College in 1948 and later to St. Francis College) and New England College of Osteopathic Medicine which shared the same campus in Biddeford, Me. In 1996 the addition of Westbrook College in Portland created a two-campus institution which exists today.
