The "St. Lawrence and North Country Studies Award" collection was started in 1992 and was renamed the "Josephine G. Mentley St. Lawrence and North Country Studies Award" in 1995. The competition is sponsored by the Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries for the purpose of support and encouraging student research projects on institutional or regional topics. The competition is judged by a panel composed of faculty from various disciplines using the criteria of writing style, quality of synthesis and extent of research, distinction is made between work generated for an honors thesis, work submitted for an undergraduate research paper, and work done in the First-Year Program, with separate awards being made in each category. The award was named in honor of Josephine Mentley a former reference librarian who dedicated twenty-seven years to training St. Lawrence students for a lifetime of learning.
