Frances Phelps Otte was born in 1860 to Dr. Philip Phelps, the first president of Hope College. One of the first female graduates of Hope College (1882), Otte majored in history and English. In 1887 she married Dr. John A. Otte. Shortly thereafter, she travelled to the Amoy Mission in China, working there until 1900 when she returned to Grand Rapids, Michigan with her children.
