On 1943 May 21, the Alabama State Markets Board came into existence. It consisted of the Commissioner of Agriculture and four other members, all appointed by the Governor. Two of the members were required to be farmers and another two represented the interests of the consuming public. Members received per diem expenses and necessary travelling expenses and the Commissioner was paid $50.00 per month for his services on the Board. The Board was authorized to appoint an executive to be known as the Director of State Markets.

Its function was to acquire land and to erect structures that could be used for the inspection, grading, standardization, classification, refrigeration, etc., and marketing of agricultural products of all kinds. It could only charge fees to cover its cost of operation. In 1943 and 1944 the Board received an annual appropriation of $100,000.00. In addition, up to $200,000.00 was conditionally appropriated to the Board upon the approval of the Governor each year. Effective 1945 Oct. 1, the appropriation was amended to eliminate the $100,000.00 unconditional release, so that the total budget amount possible was $200,000.00.

On 1951 Oct. 1, the Board officially went out of existence. Its powers, duties, and functions were transferred to the State Board of Agriculture and Industries.
