Southern Baptist Convention. Home Mission Board. Christian Social Ministries Department.

Hide Profile

The Christian Social Ministries Department began in 1966 and combined existing social work programs operated by the Home Mission Board. These programs were migrant missions, literacy missions, juvenile rehabilitation, and good will centers. The Department sought to use these programs to further its objective to express Christian love and provide a Christian witness through special missions actions. In the 1970s, the Department added new programs such as single persons ministry and alcohol and drug abuse counseling. With Board-wide restructuring in 1985 and 1988, the Department became the Christian Social Ministries Centers Department and then folded into the Church and Community Ministries Department.
