Cowan, Carl A.
First African American assistant district attorney for Knox County; prominent in civil rights litigation; helped revive the local NAACP and sought to integrate the University of Tennessee as early as 1939; elected to Knox County Court (now called County Commission) in 1946 and served until 1948; worked with Thurgood Marshall for integration of the local secondary schools in 1958; and Knoxville College alumni.
