Professor of English and independent scholar; resident of Iowa City, Iowa; b. 1913. Kern received her doctorate in English literature with emphasis in 18th century drama from the University of Wisconsin in 1936. Because her husband, Alexander, held a teaching position at the University of Iowa, Kern was prevented from gaining a permanent position there due to the anti-nepotism policy in force in the 1930s.
Instead, Kern taught at private liberal arts colleges in the area and abroad in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. She is the author of Dramatic satire in the age of Walpole, 1720-1750 (1976), numerous essays, and book reviews.
