Steina Vasulka was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1940 and studied at the Music Conservatory in Prague from1959-1963. She emigrated to the United States in 1965 with her husband, media artist Woody Vasulka. Together, the couple produced a pioneering body of work in the 1970's, earning them pretigious awards and international recognition. In her own work, she often uses electronic manipulation and landscape imagery along with optical devices that create richly textured works. In 1971 she and her husband co-founded The Kitchen, a major alternative exhibition and media arts center in New York.
