The only Methodist Church paper published in Virginia, the Advocate had a wide circulation throughout the South. The paper was established in 1832 as the Christian Sentinel. In Mar. 1836 the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South purchased the paper, changing the title to Virginia Conference Sentinel, and later to Richmond Christian Advocate. In 1867-1874 the paper was edited by Rev. W. W. Bennett (1821-1887), by Bennett and Rev. John J. Lafferty (d. 1909) in 1874-1878, and by Lafferty in 1878-1900. In 1900, the paper was consolidated with the Baltimore Christian Advocate to form the Baltimore and Richmond Christian Advocate.
