Professor Raymond Pepinsky was born in 1912, in St. Paul, Minnesota and received a bachelor's and master's degree at the University of Minnesota and a doctorate from the University of Chicago. He worked as a physicist in the rubber industry for a year before returning to university teaching and research at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. From 1942 to 1945, he conducted research on radar and crystallographic problems. While there, he invented a machine to automatically calculate the position of molecules in crystals. He came to Penn State in 1949 with his "brain" and was known as one of the leading experts in the field of the determination of structures of naturally-occurring molecules through x-ray analysis. He was appointed the Director of the Groth Institute in 1958, which was established to publish updated information from the standard crystallography reference books by German physicist Paul Groth. Pepinsky conducted research at Penn State for the Central Intelligence Agency in 1960, and left Penn State in 1963.
