Claude V. Palisca (1921-2001) was one of the leading musicologists of the 20th century. Born in what is now Rijeka, Croatia, he settled in the United States, and was educated at Queens College (CUNY) and Harvard University. He spent most of his career on the faculty of the Department of Music of Yale University. He is best known for his research on the history of music theory and aesthetics, especially in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and for his widely-used textbooks Baroque Music and A History of Western Music. (The latter work was originally by Donald J. Grout; Palisca was responsible for the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th editions.).
