Richard Mattern Montgomery (b. Dec. 15, 1911, Hollidaysburg, Pa.-d. Aug. 27, 1987), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1933 and completed flying training the following year. His first wartime job was organizing the aviation cadet training program. In 1947 he was a member of the Joint Strategic Plans and Operations Group for General MacArthur in Tokyo, and the next year he joined the 51st Fighter Wing in Okinawa, flying the new F-80 jet. In 1952 he became chief of staff, Strategic Air Command (SAC) HQ, and in 1956 was assigned as deputy commander, 2nd Air Force, SAC. After serving as assistant vice chief of staff, Air Force HQ, he was assigned as vice commander in chief, U.S. Air Forces in Europe (Germany). He retired from Air Force service in 1966.
