Schramm, Jack E.

Hide Profile

Jack Schramm worked as superintendent of payroll with the Detroit Department of Street Railways (DSR) before his retirement. In 1976 he teamed up with Bill Henning, a professor at Macomb County Community College, and the two of them put together their first book, Detroit: Its Trolleys and Interurbans. This was followed two years later by Detroit's Street Railways, Volume 1. 863-1922. Photograph proofs from this volume are included in this collection (Box 1: 1-4). In 1980 Schramm and Henning, along with Thomas J. Dworman, came out with Volume 11, 1922-1956. These books were published as Bulletin 117 (Volume I) and Bulletin 120 (Volume II), of the Central Electric Railfans' Association. A third publication, When Eastern Michigan Rode the Rails, written with Richard R. Andrews, was published by Interurban Press of Glendale, California in 1984. Schramm and Henning also created the Michigan Transit Museum at the former railroad depot in Mt. Clemens. It displays a number of elevated and interurban cars, along with memorabilia from the days when rails were the primary form of transportation.
