University of Illinois graduate obtaining a B.S. in Geology in 1939 and an M.S. in Geology in 1941, a Captain in the 2nd Battalion, 395th Infantry Combat Team, 90th Division during WWII, and awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
Born in Bowen, Ill. The son of Hurley and Mabel Upchurch Smith. Member ROTC while an undergrad and worked for the State Geological Survey while a grad student. Married Margaret Dragoo in 1942. Wounded in France in 1944.
